A Special Cook Shack House Concert
Mary-Lou... A band from France
These folks are good friends from Brittany and professional French musicians who merge American traditional music and French folk songs into a wonderful blend of special and fun music. They are touring for three weeks in the USA, so we could not resist working in an extra Cook Shack Concert to feature their music. They love the music of the American South and you will hear this in their performance ... a blend of French, American, Cajun, Acadian, jug bands, hobos, trains and folk. Expect, in addition to some French songs, and original songs, to hear the music of folks like Jimmie Rodgers, Bob Wills, Patsy Cline, Patsy Montana, Woody and Arlo Guthrie and more. You'll like them and you'll have a great time listening to their special charm and music. It's gonna be a fun night!

We first met Félicie and Jean-Luc some years ago when they visited for Merlefest and stayed at our house. After that we traveled to France and spent time with them in their town of Penmarc'h, a small and beautiful village on the coast of Brittany, right on the Atlantic and very picturesque. We were able to travel with them to several concerts and even to play a tune with them at one show. We have great memories of wonderful times with Félicie and Jean-Luc in France, enjoying music, sampling the local fare and meeting new friends.
Mary-Lou has been a performing professional band since 1996, traveling all over France and throughout much of Europe. A few years ago they spent 6 weeks in the US, attending Merlefest with us and also making their way through the Cajun Country of Louisiana, then to Oklahoma to visit Woody Guthrie's home memorial, and returning through Nashville to Florida. They have produced many records and DVDs featuring the full band, Mary-Lou, or the duo, Les Hobos, and have collaborated on numerous other musical projects. Back home in France they are well-known and very popular, presenting their special blend of American and French music to locals and in festivals, cafes and all sorts of music venues. The often perform at La Roche sur Foron, pretty much the French twist on Merlefest.
Mary-Lou is a trio and features husband and wife, Jean-Luc and Félicie, who are accompanied by Stephane Dholdt. Jean-Luc is a skilled guitar player who enjoys flat-picking, finger-picking and slide guitar. He also sings and plays a number of other instruments, including harmonica and accordion. Félicie is a talented singer who plays guitar, fiddle and washboard. She proudly owns and plays a Gibson Guitar she bought from Myles Ireland on a previous visit to the Cook Shack and the washboard is played Cajun style using thimbles on the fingers. Stephane Dhondt is the pianist for Mary-Lou and is a harmony singer and skilled boogie woogie player who can also play in a number of other rhythm and lead styles.
